He attended St. Joseph's Secondary School and University College, Galway from which he graduated with a first class honours degree in Psychology at the age of 19. He worked in Oxford for some time before moving to Munich. There he sold paintings in the street markets. He subsequently moved to Paris to paint, and did a variety of odd jobs. In 1988, he was invited back to Oxford to continue research in Psychology.

In 1985 he had a joint exhibition in UCG with Dr. Noel O'Neill, and a one-man show there in 1988. He exhibited three portraits in the "Faces in a Bookshop" exhibition in Kennys Art Gallery, Galway in 1990. His first exhibition in 1991 was made up of a number of fine figurative studies and a series of landscapes, mostly painted in and around Galway.
