Kevin Sharkey
Kevin Sharkey, a self taught artist, was born in Dublin in 1961. He spent his formative years in Donegal and this is where he calls home. He began painting fifteen years ago and after a diverse career where he worked as a fisherman, a television presenter, a photographer and a song-writer, he now paints full time.
After a series of successful exhibitions in London, New York and Mexico, Sharkey returned to Donegal in 2001. Recent Irish exhibitions have been received with critical acclaim, Barry Egan of the Sunday Independent referred to Sharkey as “One of Ireland’s most respected and successful artists’’ and Hot Press magazine called him “Ireland’s first art superstar”. Sharkey’s work has attracted the attention of private buyers from all over the world, from Charles Saatchi to Liam Neeson.
Sharkey is an abstract painter who works in a variety of media, his work is passionate and monumental, loaded with expressive energy and vigour. Sharkey’s paintings are both disturbing and joyous, full of contradiction and contrast, they are an expression of the artist’s own inner turmoil and his road to self-awareness through painting. For Sharkey painting is a spiritual experience; “I believe art sustains because it captures human energy. I believe healing is our reason for living. I believe, and that’s why I paint.’’
