2011: FLAMIN' MOLLY! JOYCE MEETS BART, ELVIS AND LENNON. June 18th 2011

It's the time of year when we celebrate the life and works of our greatest author. But the monochrome world of James Joyce has been turned technicolour in a new series of works celebrating this year's Bloomsday.

In a new exhibition, artist Roy Wallace has the world's most eminent writer as a Zelig-like figure pictured with Laurel and Hardy in 1920s Hollywood, Elvis Presley and John Lennon in the late Sixties, and even Bart Simpson.

"I've been a big fan of James Joyce and his writings over the years," Roy told The Diary.

"I hope that my paintings of James Joyce, in perhaps some unusual settings and encounters, show another side of this very gifted man," the artist explained.

The 65-year-old painter admits he has yet to read Joyce's masterpiece Ulysses, but says he may now have to after being privately commissioned to make sense of the 700-page novel for a one-off piece of art.

"What I've been asked to do is, I believe, next to impossible, but watch this space," he said.

Roy's work can be seen at The Baile Bán Gallery in The Westbury Mall, Dublin.
